Old man resting in the canoe he is carving out of a tree trunk. This photo was taken in 1981, in Baimuru, Papua New Guinea. Baimuru is situated in Gulf Province, in the middle of a large tidal swamp area with mostly brackish water. While there is "dry ground" most of the area is water and mud, and the best way to get around is in dug out canoes .

This statue stands in the garden of Ban Sufa resort and restaurant near Vientiane, Laos. See http://bansufagarden.com/. I like the serenity of the face; and the fact that it is standing in the shade of a number of beautiful trees.

A small shop in Luang Prabang Province, Laos. Photo taken in 2010. It is remarkable how quickly Laos is becoming a consumer society. A similar shop today will have many, many more goods for sale, bith in range and in quantity.
